How often to wash your hair
Share
The frequency with which you should wash your hair depends on several factors, such as hair type, scalp condition, lifestyle, and daily activities. Although your dermatologist is the best person to advise you, here are some general recommendations.
Normal or healthy hair
Every 2–3 days.

If your hair is neither fine nor thick, and you don't experience problems with excess oiliness or dryness, then you have normal hair. Washing it every 2 or 3 days is enough to remove excess oil and dirt without unbalancing the scalp's essential natural oils.
Oily hair
Every day or every other day.

A scalp that produces more oil may require more frequent washing. Use a mild shampoo to avoid drying out or irritating the skin.
Dry or frizzy hair
Twice a week or less.

This hair type tends to need more hydration, so it's best to avoid over-washing it. Supplement with hydrating conditioners or masks.
Fine hair
Every 1–2 days.

This hair type tends to get oily more quickly and may require more regular washing. If you notice it has thinned over the years, use fortifying shampoos or supplements to strengthen it.
Thick hair
Every 2–4 days.

Thicker hair usually retains dirt and oil more uniformly, allowing for less frequent washing.
Lifestyle

If you exercise intensely or sweat a lot, you can wash your hair more frequently, especially after a workout session. Consider using only water or a mild shampoo if you wash your hair daily to avoid drying it out.
